What is Knitwear?
Knitwear care varies based on fibre composition, yarn type, and construction to preserve its shape, texture, and longevity. Always refer to the care label on each garment for the most accurate and tailored care instructions.
Pilling in knitwear naturally happens when fibres rub against each other, causing small balls or "pills" of fibre to form on the surface. Pilling often results from friction and wear, especially in areas that are more prone to movement or contact, like under the arms, along seams, or where a bag rubs against the fabric. If pilling occurs, gently remove using a sweater shaver or fabric comb. Regular maintenance prevents pilling from building up and extends the life of knitwear items.
HOW TO WASH KNITWEAR
Handwashing is the most recommended method for all types of knitwear, especially for delicate fibres like wool, cashmere and silk. However, machine washing is suitable for stronger fibres like cotton, acrylic, and synthetic blends. Below are the general rules to note:
1.Wash in cold water, using a gentle cycle.
2.Avoid using fabric softeners, as these can damage the fibres. Use special detergent for delicate materials, such as wool and cashmere.
3.Do not bleach.
4.Wash before wearing, inside out, with similar colours.
HOW TO DRY KNITWEAR
1.Shaping: After washing, reshape your knitwear while damp to prevent it from stretching or losing its original shape.
2.Air & Flat Drying: Place knitwear on a towel and press to gently squeeze out excess water. Lay flat to dry on a clean surface. Avoid hanging, as it can stretch or distort the garment.
3.Ironing or Steaming: Ironing or steaming should only be done when necessary. Knitwear is made from delicate fibres so it should be handled with care.
4.Steaming is the gentler option, especially for fibres like cashmere, silk, and fine wool.
5.Avoid Steaming/Ironing Synthetics: Acrylic, nylon, spandex and polyester can melt or lose shape with high heat, so avoid ironing or steaming.
6.Ironing: Avoid direct ironing, as it can distort the fabric and leave shine marks. If needed, use iron’s low heat setting and always place a pressing cloth on the reverse side to protect the fibres.
7.Do not tumble dry and wring.
HOW TO STORE KNITWEAR
1.Fold: Fold your knitwear along its natural seams and place tissue paper or soft cloth between garments to avoid creases.
2.Don’t Hang: Avoid hanging knitwear, especially heavier or delicate items, as it can stretch the fabric and cause sagging.
3.Store in a Cool, Dry Place: Keep knitwear in a cool, dry area to prevent mould or mildew. Use breathable storage bags, not plastic, to avoid moisture buildup. Natural fibres like wool and cashmere attract moths, so use moth repellents and occasionally air out your knitwear. Do not stack while damp.
NOTE: "Each design may have specific care needs based on its construction or the fabric blend. Always refer to the care label for detailed instructions, as requirements may vary depending on the material composition."
