What is Denim?
Denim is a durable, timeless fabric, typically crafted from cotton or cotton blends (with polyester or spandex), woven in a classic twill pattern. Each piece is handcrafted due to the inherent characteristics of the fibres, dyeing process, and fabric treatments—such as grinding or spraying to create whiskers or gradients. As a result, variations in measurements, colours, and textures make every item one of a kind. Denim may occasionally retain a distinct scent from the dyeing process, and it naturally fades after the garment is washed or aired out.
Like all cotton fabrics, it naturally shrinks when washed as the cotton fibres expand when wet and contract as they dry. Denim, especially the darker washes, is prone to colour transfer. The indigo dye can rub off and transfer to other clothing, accessories, or upholstery through friction or when the product becomes damp (e.g., from perspiration or rain). While this is a normal part of denim wear, it’s important to take steps to prevent and manage colour transfer by avoiding contact with light-coloured surfaces.
HOW TO WASH DENIM GARMENTS
1.Make sure that all the zippers and buttons are closed to maintain their shape and prevent snagging once they’re in the washer.
2.Turn denim inside out to protect the outer surface and preserve its colour. Wash your denim with similar colours to prevent dye transfer.
3.Wash in cold water to prevent shrinkage and minimize fading.
4.Use mild detergent and avoid softener as it can leave a residue on denim which may affect texture and appearance.
5.Place denim in the laundry net before putting it in the washing machine to prevent snagging.
6.Do not bleach.
HOW TO DRY DENIM GARMENTS
1.Air dry denim by laying it flat or hanging it up in a well-ventilated area. This is the best method to prevent shrinkage and preserve the fabric shape and fit.
2.Avoid using the dryer altogether, as it can cause shrinkage and damage the fabric integrity.
3.If your denim feels too tight after a wash, you can gently stretch it while damp to restore its shape. Do not overstretch, as it may distort the fabric.
4.Do not wring.
HOW TO STORE DENIM GARMENTS
1.Store denim in a cool, dry place, away from direct sunlight, to prevent fading.
2.Do not stack while damp.
