Debbie Fermin
Asian woman in the medical field
As part of #LBWomensCollective, Debbie shares her journey and her inspiration for thriving in the medical field as an Asian.
What are the challenges you experienced being an Asian woman working in your field? How did you overcome the pressure?
I, myself, have experienced microaggressions and blatant discrimination. As an Asian woman in the medical field, there is that constant pressure to always prove myself. Despite that, I learned that the color of my skin, how I look and how I talk do not reflect my competency as a physician.
Who were your greatest support systems throughout your journey? Who were the male allies present in your life who also advocate for women equality?
My greatest support systems are my family, my partner and my medicine residency program. I am very fortunate that I am surrounded by male allies that advocate for women equality.

How do you think women equality can be better achieved in society?
Women equality can be better achieved by starting a conversation of empowering one another. I am fortunate that #WomenInMedicine exist. This is a group of female doctors and male allies from different medical institutions that advocate for equality in the workplace.
What would you tell your younger self/similar women and little girls who are held back by societal norms?
Your full potential will only be realized when you break free from societal norms and pressures. Remember, you are a strong, determined and resilient Asian woman.
